We Got Cold

This January we decided to embrace the winter month and immerse ourselves into the cold and winter activities. We tried dogsledding for the first time, stayed in a hobbit house and tried winter hot tent camping. Oh and don’t forget the ice climbing… something we never knew we wanted to try but we had a BLAST!

Then came the highlight of the month: driving a camper van around Iceland in the winter months! I (Tracey) LOVE traveling in a van and being able to do this in a northern country like Iceland was an absolute dream. We did  a lot of activities such as glacier hiking, snorkeling between 2 tectonic plates in 2 degree water and whale watching and as much as these were amazing experiences, nothing beats the views of the snow covered mountains and the dancing northern lights in the night sky. We loved Iceland but what it really solidified for me was that I have a dream to own my own camper van someday! :)

Our very first time seeing the northern lights.

Now I know there are probably a lot of hidden waterfalls and hikes that we didn’t do during our time in Iceland but it really depends on what you want from your trip. Winter months are generally low season here in Iceland and they actually don’t plow all their roads leaving a large portion of them inaccessible. That being said, Iceland for us, had to be seen in the winter, the snow covered mountains, volcanoes and high probability of the northern lights due to limited daylight. Also, in low season, you miss a lot of the crowds. When we were up north, some days we saw less than 1 cars along our drive making it absolutely surreal.

If you are ever looking for a camper van rental company in Iceland, we highly recommend Camp Easy! From the moment we landed at the airport, used their free shuttle and within a couple hours we were all tucked in our van and on the road. We used the Easy Clever 4X4 and I have to say, it handled really well in on the icy winter roads. Not only that but they send you prepared with their tablet equipt with the weather, road condition maps, available campsites, a trouble shooting guide as well as a live chat with them in case you require it. If you want to check them out for yourself, check them out here.

What Next?

We are currently in Tulum Mexico with family for a week and at the same time, we are planning our trip to Cambodia which just got confirmed a few minutes before writing this. Spoiler alert, a tuktuk will be involved…
